This publication contains a collection of texts from books and articles that address the safety of FLINTA* persons (female, lesbian, intersex, non-binary, transgender, agender) in public spaces. To reflect the perspective of this publication, gender-specific terms—particularly “women”—have been replaced with more inclusive wording in some texts, provided this could be done without distorting the content. In the case of statistical data and research findings, no linguistic adjustments were made in order to preserve the validity of the data.
The contributions span the period from 1980 to 2025. We are aware that older texts do not reflect the current state of knowledge and discourse. Their inclusion serves the purpose of contextualization and historical framing. The chronological order of the contents is intended to trace a line of development and illustrate both how things were then and where we stand today.
